Maybe you’re thinking of rebranding your store to boost your business brand recognition among your customers.
Or perhaps you’re regretting the store name you came up with at 3 am on a Saturday night (and forgot how to change it back 🤪).
So here’s a step-by-step guide on how to change your Shopify store name.
Changing Your Shopify Store Name
You can easily change the name of your Shopify store on the mobile app or through the Shopify website.
Method One: Do It With The Shopify Mobile App
Download the Shopify Mobile app if you don’t already have it. The app is available for both Android and iOS.
Click on the Store icon that appears at the right bottom corner. Head to Setting, select General, fill in your new store name under the Store name field and delete the current store name.
Click Save on top and check your store details. You should see that your actual store name has been changed to the new name.
Method Two: Use The Shopify Admin Website
You can also change your store name in the Shopify website.
Log in to your Shopify admin account on your computer and head to the Settings page. The option is located at the bottom left corner along the vertical navigation bar. Select General.
You can see your current store name in the field under Store name. Delete to change your store name and type in your new name for your store.
Click on the Save button that appears on the top right to keep your store name change. Your store detail should now reflect the new name of your store.
Changing Your Shopify Domain Name
If you want to change your Shopify domain name and you’re using the Shopify sub domain as your main Shopify URL, you’ll have to create a new account. Your subdomain is the part that comes before the .myshopify.com. A business can’t change their Shopify sub domain once it is created and registered.
Alternatively, you can create a custom domain to match the new name of your Shopify store and set it as the primary location for your online business.
Step One: Choose The Right Store URL
Before investing the time and resources into a new custom domain, you may want to do some research into traffic data. The new business name you want to change to should benefit your customer branding and help you rank your website more easily in the search engines.
Choosing a top-level extension such as a .com will help increase the trust that customers have in your new business. If the new store name is not available with the .com extension, then create a new domain with extensions like .net or .org.
If you can’t get any of these top-level extensions, you may want to brainstorm again and change the name to one that has a .com available.
Step Two: Connecting Your Custom Domain
On your dashboard, click on Online Store > Domains.
You can connect your new domain that you’ve purchased from an external registrar such as Namecheap or GoDaddy. Shopify provides you a guide and you can ask Shopify or your external registrar’s support team if you have a question.
Alternatively, you can transfer your existing domain from an external registrar to Shopify or buy a new one. Buying a new domain for your online store directly from Shopify saves you the trouble of buying from external registrars like GoDaddy.
Step Three: Check Your New Domain Name
It can take up to 48 hours for the new URL to propagate and display all the latest posts and target customer information you have in your Shopify account.
